RI migrants seek protection

Indonesian migrant workers in Macau have demanded the government take measures to protect them from placement agencies which they say benefit at their expense.

Lina of the Migrante Macau labor union told a gathering on Sunday the government had not done enough to help Indonesian migrant workers in Macau, who number between 7,000 and 8,000.

"The labor law here guarantees the rights of migrant workers, including the right to a decent wage, weekly holiday, appropriate work hours, lodging and return flights. But the agencies often refuse to inform Indonesian migrant workers of these rights," Lina said.

The gathering was the first forum of its kind to be held in Macau. The event, organized by the Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers, saw workers share experiences and problems.
