YOGYAKARTA: The School of Medicine at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has promised to provide free cataract surgery for the poor.
According to UGM dean Hardyanto Soebono, the university has targeted to provide free eye surgery to 10 people every month. The first free surgery was provided on Feb. 25.
The public service program was launched as part of the school's 62nd anniversary, in conjunction with the 26th anniversary of Sardjito hospital.
"This is to show the public that we care about the poor," he said.
Suhardjo, the head of a local eye specialists association, said the growth of cataract patients in Yogyakarta had reached 0.01 percent per year among a population of three million. -- JP
