TANGERANG: Rising water processing costs in Tangerang may result in higher monthly water rates, an official said Tuesday.

"The increase of water rates has yet to be determined. But we have to raise them in the future because the production costs are rising," a spokesperson for Tangerang water operator PDAM Tirta Kerta Raharja, Anda Suhanda, said, as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.

Anda estimated the increase could reach 100 percent from the current price, considering the rising need for clean water processing.

According to Anda, the plan was still being discussed by the internal PDAM commissioner and would be proposed to the Tangerang administration later on. He added the plan would not have to wait for permission from the city council.

The water company has 99,000 customers, with 63,000 in Tangerang municipality and the rest in the regency. --JP
