Indonesian govt to block
porn websites next month

The government said Friday it would block pornographic websites starting next month as it kicked off its free Internet service program to high schools across the country.

"With free Internet service, our internet users will jump from the current 25 million to about 50 million users," Information and Communications Minister Muhammad Nuh said after inaugurating
an information technology laboratory at Al Akbar Mosque in Surabaya, East Java.

"This will also bring negative consequences as people will easily be able to access porn sites. Therefore we will ban porn sites next month."

The ban will be carried out through the installation of software at high school local area networks, in cooperation with Internet service providers and through a people's awareness movement, he
said.

"The software will automatically disallow a computer to display a porn website when someone tries to access it," Nuh said.

Internet service providers will also be urged to prevent their customers from accessing pornographic websites, he said. (***)
