Biak Numfor regental legislative council requested a local firm to participate in the construction of a Russia-backed satellite air launch by building supporting infrastructure such as roads and seaport, council speaker Nehemia Wospakrik said Saturday.

"Quality of roads and the provision of a container seaport in Biak are part of 10-clause demand requested by Russia before constructing the satellite air launch," said Nehemia.

"Faiman Indo's participation in preparing infrastructure for the satellite project is expected to provide employement for local residents."

Faiman Indo is a firm owned by the Biak Numfor regental administration. The firm's participation would also increase revenue for Biak Numfor administration.

Russia has picked Biak for its satellite air launch site due the presence of an airport with international standard and its location close to the equator.

Instead of using rockety, satellite air launch means sending a satellite into orbit using an airplane.

The project location is close to Frans Kaisiepo Airport which has a 3,570-meter runway. The airport shares the runway with the Manuhua Air Force Base.

The project is expected to start in 2010 or 2011. (nvn)
