Forum: Expectations from education

In general, I agree with Iqbal on the expectations from our education system. With a good education system, we can develop. I also agree with him that we must not adopt a fully Western system.

But there is one statement made by Iqbal that I disagree on. He said that we don't blame teachers if our children fail in education. I think schools, education system and teachers are responsible for children's success.

Gynecologists, single women -- March 17, p. 2

As a foreigner living in Indonesia in the late 1990s, I was shocked that as a single woman I had to "justify" my consultation with a gynecologist for a medical problem.

The problem was not related to sexual activity but I still had to justify the consultation because I was young and single. Since when are female problems only isolated to older or married women?

The consultation was made worse when the doctor removed the utensil and using her naked eye declared that I was fit and healthy. It was the most condescending and patronizing consultation I have had with a medical practitioner. And what was worse was that it was a female doctor.

When I returned to Australia several years later I followed up with doctors here and was finally diagnosed and treated (surgery) for a genuine medical condition. Something that could have been dealt with much earlier and been much less traumatic.

I feel sorry for young women in Indonesia who must continually face this battle with the medical fraternity. It surely is not ignorance on the part of the doctors. So why put people's lives at risk? Is it a power trip? Or do they just like to play God?

Adam Air flights -- March 8, p. 1

Of course it should halt it's operations, or should have been halted. The way in which the company reacted to all it's catastrophes leaves much to be desired.

Now, they are halting their services for the wrong reasons, being unable to pay for insurance. Wouldn't it be better for reasons of inability to run an airline safe enough for us to fly with.

If anyone is just thinking of money, money and more money, please don't go into any business that would endanger the lives of the public if dedication and a sense of responsibility are the least of your concerns.

Like doctors and hospital owners, public land transportation operators who can't even (or should I say won't) maintain their vehicles properly due to greed for money, money and more money, for the safety of those they profit from, only do so at their own peril.

For the private airline owners whose only reason is for self pride of being an airline owner and nothing else, please don't get rich and arrogant at our (the public's) expense. If you do, where's the pride in that?

Youths, green day -- March 8, p. 4

Let's go ahead and do this environmental awareness day regularly. We all need a good understanding and awareness of this matter. This world is supposed to be a wonderful planet. Let's keep it clean, beautiful, healthy and safe.
