Dewi Sandra
There is no gated community or luxury apartment living for singer and Indonesian Idol co-host Dewi Sandra. The airy joglo traditional Javanese-style house she shares with husband of two years, musician Glenn Fredly, sits on a small side street behind a busy South Jakarta market. “I’m a home girl,” Dewi jokes as an intermittent stream of street vendors and noisy schoolchildren pass by. “I say hi to my neighbors and nobody bothers us.” Born to a British father and Indonesian mother, she is an eager-to-please host, dashing back and forth from the kitchen with coffee, fruit, chocolate and even a detox supplement on this stifling weekday morning. She makes the most of her increasingly rare days off by spending time with her husband, reading and playing with the family dogs.
+ Family
They are the people who know who we really are; we don’t have to pretend around them. We don’t have to be a superstar or a Goody Two-shoes for them to like us. I have a good “family”, and that includes my own family, my in-laws and my management. I don’t think I could live without them. They are the pillar for everything.
+ Books
I don’t like to waste time doing nothing. With a book, your brain keeps on going and you learn something. I get richer from books. I used to hate reading, I thought it was such an old-fashioned thing. But my younger sister got me into reading when I was in my teens with Harry Potter. Now it’s a case of reading everything I can get my hands on. I’ve recently moved from biographies and autobiographies to self-improvement books, and I’m also reading about the Koran. It opens your mind to the fact there are bigger things out there.
+ Music
Everybody needs it in life, because it’s an anti-stress thing to let go and relax. It’s around us in nature with the trickle of water and birds singing. It soothes the soul, gives you fun in life and rhythm. But silence is a good thing, too; you have to have balance. That is when I go and read my books.
+ Wedding Ring
This was the most romantic thing he ever did. We were supposed to go out to dinner but everything was backlogged at the studio. So it was really late when he was done, and we ended up going to Roti Bakar Eddy. He wasn’t eating, even though he said he was hungry. “Let’s go around the city,” he said, and we went to Monas. People were setting up something for the next day so we got into the park easily. It was midnight and we sat on the grass, jabbering away. Then he got on his knees and said, “Dewi Sandra Killick, will you be my wife.” I couldn’t speak for about 10 minutes. He’s a romantic person but sometimes he is a bit lazy about it! ... I can’t believe I found this note from when we were in Bali for the wedding.
+ Fruit and Yoghurt
When I was a teenager, I ate whatever I wanted as long as it tasted good and was fast. As we get older, I’ve become more aware of disease and our reactions to food. It’s crazy right now with all the junk food, I think it should be banned. People really don’t realize that it can cause cancer. Sure, it tastes good, but it’s just not good for your body. I’m into yoghurt, soybean milk, lots of fruit, and I avoid meat.
+ Chocolate
But I have a sweet tooth. I love chocolate, I believe it is a blessing from God!
+ Lingerie
I think all women should have lingerie, it makes you feel good, and also your partner. So two people are happy in one go! It doesn’t have to be silk, but it should fit right.
+ Makeup
I love the Blush-on by PAC for giving me rosy cheeks all the time. No, I am not just saying that because I endorse it!
