Indonesia defeated the United States 6-2 in the final of the World Cup Soccer Sixes tournament to claim its first title at the biennial event, which was comprised of expatriates, former national squad members -- including Rocky Puttiray pictured (center) struggling for possession with American Micah Fisher (right) and Marc Hiller -- and coaches, held at the International Sports Club of Indonesia complex in Ciputat, South Jakarta on Saturday.
Expatriates representing 20 different countries joined the one-day tournament, including from England, Germany, Scotland, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain, Russia, Australia, India, Chile, Denmark, Wales, Canada and Cameroon.
Matches were played on a pitch one third the size of a standard soccer field, with six players on each team.
The organizer's spokesman, Gregory Long, said the first event had been staged in 2006, with Cameroon taking the championship.
Although he said the event was designed to bolster friendship among expatriates, the occasion was marred by a brief scuffle during a semifinal match featuring Indonesia and Chile.
One of Chilean players was seen chasing an Indonesian player after an apparent elbowing incident. Indonesia edged Chile 4-3 to advance to the finals.
"Maybe, they (those involved in the quarrel) forget we are here to have fun and make friends," said Indonesian team captain Marvin Suwarso. -- The Jakarta Post/ind
