Boy sets fire to himself and ex-girlfriend

In a fit of jealousy, a teenage boy set fire to himself, an ex-girlfriend and two other teenagers in South Bekasi on Wednesday night.

The girl, Resti, who suffered burns over 90 percent of her body, is in intensive care at the Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital in Central Jakarta.

"Resti received the worst injuries while the boys received burns over 10 to 20 percent of their bodies," director of Bekasi Municipality Hospital Bambang Djati told reporters Thursday, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Police reported the incident happened at 8 p.m. when Resti and her two friends, Susanto and Rais, had been planning to watch a movie at an outdoor theater near Pasar Pagi traditional market.

The three were chatting in front of a kiosk when the girl's ex-boyfriend, Dody, approached carrying a plastic bag filled with gasoline. He poured the fuel onto Resti and the two other boys, as well as himself.

Dody then used a cigarette lighter to set them all aflame.

"It seems that he (Dody) was jealous since Resti was already getting along with other boys," said Susanto at the intensive care unit of the Bekasi hospital, where he was receiving medical attention.

The outdoor movie was canceled due to the incident.

Head of Bekasi Police Sr. Comr. Masguntur Laope, confirmed it was Dody's jealousy that led to the incident. --JP
