Harbour routs Hi-Tech in SEABA Cup

Reigning champions Harbour Centre of the Philippines thrashed Thailand's Hi-Tech with a 99-63 win on the opening day of the Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) Champions Cup 2008 in North Jakarta on Friday.

Tang Tyrone scored 21 points, three assists and three rebounds for Harbour.

Head coach Jorge Gallent said his team did not perform its best as it got off to a slow first quarter. Luckily, they picked up their game in the second half.

"They were very tense in the first and second quarters because it was the first international event for most of them," he told The Jakarta Post.

Captain Piroon Piyapong shot nine points in the first quarter, pushing Hi-Tech in front with a 25-22 score. Their dominance was brief with their form quickly slipping, missing plenty of shooting opportunities.

"Because of their lead, I think we just gave up in the last two quarters," Piroon said, adding their strategy was to save energy for the game the next day.

Thailand's national player admitted Harbour Centre had attacked well and felt his team had played hard in each quarter.

"They were too good for our team," the 27-year-old said.

Harbour Centre has four Filipino players and two foreign players from the United States and Nigeria, while Hi-Tech, which won Thailand's King's Cup in 2005 and 2007, is made up of Thai players only.

The second game saw Indonesian champions Satria Muda Britama narrowly beat the National Basketball League team of Malaysia with a score of 88-86.

"We are proud of our team because we gave it our best up to the very last seconds. At least we were close to winning it," said Malaysia's head coach David Zamar.

Malaysia will play Hi-Tech on Saturday and Satria Muda Britama will meet with Harbour Centre. (ind)

To the officials and committee, and, of course, the fiba secretary of the asean region, are you now satisfied that you won?! it was so clear that you were all bias to the host nation, Indonesia!. how much did the indonesians had paid you?! you have exchange this tournament, the spirit of sportmanship, and camaraderie to money! if we only knew that you were already planning something, it would be great if team philippines didnt join the tournament anyway. you robbed us with the championship! its a desaster! we feel like we were robbed! to the fiba secretary, sir! you are the fiba secretary here in asean, you should act like one! you used your position, the fiba body itself, are you not ashame of what you have don?! you went "missing" in that important game. your not worthy to be called secretary of the fiba in the asean region. you have started to corrupt the fiba organization here in asean, and it will never be a surprise that this things will happen again. and one last thing, you didnt allow one of our imports to play, sam ekwe, you were insisting that he should have the clearance from nigeria to play as an import where he, sam, is not even a pro basketball player? for your information, "mr. secretary", he's just a collegiate player, his playing for the san beda red lions in the philippine NCAA basketball league. he doesnt need a clearance from nigeria 'coz in the first place he didnt played for the nigeria national team. he had just even learnd to play basketball here in the philippines. and i know that as a fiba rule, u dont need some clearance from your home country if u havent played there. your so selfish, arrogant, last year we won the seaba title in a fare and square match,so sad that this years seaba, the philippines had lost its title off the court. what a shame! nice work! "organizers"!

and to that reporter who said that there where 4 filipinos from the US plus 2 imports in the philippine team, are you blind? there where no fil-americans in that line up. more so, we had only 1 import 'coz the "great", "honorable", fiba "secretary" has just denied one of our imports. they were all local players and it was not even a selection line up. they were all players that HARBOUR CENTRE,if you dont know, harbour centre is a ballclub under the amatuer league, the PBL. in short! it wasnt the best players that we have. if only the SBP can approve it, sending an all high school players can do that job. but it was harbour centre who won the bid to participate since last year where they won that seaba tournament fare and square! by comparison, player to player, our high school players are even more good than that of your senior national team members. philippines are still the best. you may have our best coaches but still, filipino players have good, better, best, basketball fundamentals in asean. thats the reality! filipino players are still taller, bigger, stronger and athletic. so to that reporter/journalist, keep your mouth shot!

It's good to know that The Philippine Basketball Team, represented by an "amateur" team which is 'Harbour Centre' from one of Philippines star-studded basketball leagues - The PBL, handily won its first assignment against Thailand in the on-going FIBA tourney in Jakarta, Indonesia. (Too bad I'm in East Java... can't get watch the tournament, 'though!)

This is the boys' 2nd title defense of their crown since winning the chammpionship last year (2007) also held in Jakarta. The team captain of Thailand's team rightly said so that, "the Philippine team is too good for us!" Well, for that matter, not only for the Thais but same goes for the rest of the SEA countries.

Philippine brand of Basketball is remarkably still the best in South-East Asia... and only almost on equal footing (to some extent) with that of Japan, Korea, China and Kazhakstan. However, as Asian Basketball history may serve us - basketball enthusiasts, The Philippine Basketball teams for a while, were the best in Asia.

The RP - Harbour Centre will likely defend their crown in Jakarta for the 2nd time (after coming out of a FIBA suspension) with or without the help of some imports. Congratulations, boys! We're proud of you! :)
