A flood on Monday hit dozens of houses and broke two bridges in Ciomas village, Bogor regency.

A resident, Sri Yatini, said the flood came on Monday night as residents prepared to attend a celebration of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad at a mosque.

"Suddenly there was a tumultuous sound of water and falling coconut trees," she said.

The flood shook houses near Cisindangbarang river, flattening several of them. The village authority said the flood destroyed 30 houses, including a mosque, two bridges and a pathway that connected three villages in the area (see photo).

Another resident, Muhidin, said the flood disrupted the celebration as residents rushed home to save their belongings.

"We were afraid the flood would get worse and endanger our lives," he said.

The flood continued until early dawn Tuesday.

Village authority officials have distributed food and clean water to residents, but have yet to calculate total losses.
