Indonesia will significantly shorten its leg of the Olympic torch relay because of Chinese concerns the parade may attract pro- Tibet protests, officials said Thursday.

The relay, scheduled for April 22, was originally planned to follow a 15-kilometer (10-mile) course, passing down a main street in the capital, Jakarta.

It will now only occur in the vicinity of the city's main sports stadium, said Sumohadi Marsis, the head of the organizing committee.

"China's Olympic committee through its embassy here asked me to shorten the torch relay in Jakarta because of protests against the Chinese government on Tibetan issues in several countries," he said. "We have agreed to do that."

Protesters angry at China's human rights record or demanding Tibetan independence have attempted to disrupt the torch relay in Greece, the United Kingdom and France. The Olympic Games are being held in Beijing, China, in August.

Marsis said police were "completely convinced" the relay would be free from violent protests.(**)

Actually sport should be separated from the politics. However, somebody does not want to see China as an emerging economic, and might political power. This is the heart of all happenings recently.
