Astro TV Indonesia temporarily off air
Antara , Jakarta | Fri, 04/11/2008 3:29 PM | Headlines
The Information and Communications Ministry on Friday temporarily suspended the operations of pay TV provider Astro Nusantara.
The ministry's acting spokesman, Freddy Tulung, said the suspension was related to the failure of Astro partner PT Direct Vision to pay an obligatory fee.
Astro operator Direct Vision posted an announcement on its website that as of 10 a.m. on Friday, Astro was off the air.
Freddy said the ministry would allow Astro to return to the air once Direct Vision fulfilled all of its obligations. (***)

The Reason below why i have said its a killing field for any new business entity in Indonesia. The government has to invite investors to invest in Indonesia so that the citizen have jobs and the income they receive will improve their lifestyle. It is the duty of the Government to ensure that the businesses are successful in their set up. In the long term the people benefit.
Isn't this what the aspiration of a government should be.
If this were to continue it will scare the business away from Indonesia.
The drop largely attributed to write-off of deposit for BII
KUALA LUMPUR: Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) posted a lower profit for its financial year ended June 30, 2008, after writing off the deposit placed for the purchase of PT Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII). The write-off notwithstanding, it remains hopeful that a deal could still be reached.
The country’s largest bank, however, expects its financial performance for the current year to remain flattish given the tougher economic environment.
For the year, Maybank posted a net profit of RM2.92bil, or 60.08 sen a share, down about 8% from RM3.18bil, or 66.07 sen a share, which was largely due to a writedown of RM483.8mil for the deposit placed for the purchase of 100% equity in Sorak Financial Holdings Pte Ltd, the controlling shareholder of BII.
Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid answering questions on Wednesday.
The net loss of the deposit, however, was RM290mil as Maybank had made RM193mil in foreign exchange gains from money placed earlier in Singapore to pay for the entire BII acquisition.

I'm with Ganim, what's the deal with no EPL on ASTRO? That's why I got ASTRO after Indovision lied to me about including it, to get EPL. Now Astro mysteriously doesn't have it... anyone have a clue?

Most stupid situation. This corrupt system will not let any foreign investor to proposer and local business organizations will not improve their image or working ethics to compete in international market. Even after this ASTRO /indovision/Kablevision get EPL showing, i will not subscribe any of these. Forget it.

If what is said, you must know the laws of the country before investing. Question is how do you keep in touch when the regulations keep changing all the time. It's like this, before any investor comes to invest, it is this set of laws and after the investment has materilise then there are new set of laws to comply with.
Finally with the implementation of the new regulation the investors could not comply because it does not match with the returns of investment then he is bleed dry.
In time to come it will be a killing field in Indonesia for any new business initiative.

the inside story is simply this:
The head of the Communications Department is in cohoots with MNC/RCTV who are losing out on business big time since Astro came on gangbusters. The dude gets paid on the side, and he issues an offical letter dated 1 April for Astro to fix the "infractions" however small they are. The list consisted of 4 items, 3 of which were resolved immmediately. The remaining item was a gov inspection of their new satellite receiver, which depends on the officials being available to inspect it, of course.
Funny thing is although the letter was dated 1 April, it wasnt presented to Astro until ten days later, the Thursday before the big EPL weekend. This gave Asto and the gov one day to do the inspection, on which of course the Communications Dept stalled. Of course this was intentional.
These are old school boys and they do a disservice to Indonesia and the government. Jusuf Kalla wanted to watch the games on Sunday and was "PISSED" that Astro was off. When he found out what dirt had happened, he made sure it got rectified ASAP. Otherwise, Astro might still be off the air today.!

It is a well known fact that Indonesia has very confusing rules when come to do business in Indonesia. Just like the traffic signs and road system in Jakarta.
