Miss Tourism Indonesia will be held for the first time this year said El John Foundation, the organizing committee, on Saturday.

The event is supported by many parties including the Culture and Tourism Ministry.

The registration has been opened since March 2008 with the applicants now reaching 100. The registration form is available at www.misstourismindonesia.com, Travel Club and in-flight Sriwijaya magazines.

Through a selection, the participants will be narrowed to 40 finalists, who will be quarantined starting from June 28 through July 5 at the Batavia Hotel, Jakarta.

“The grand final will be held on July 5,” El John Foundation chairman Johnnie Sugiarto was quoted by Antara as saying.

The winner of Miss Tourism Indonesia 2008 must sign a one-year contract and agree to participate in the Miss Tourism International contest. (***)

Instead of worthless gimmicks, why doesn't Indonesia, which clearly wants more tourists and has faired miserably regionally recently, deal with the real issues as to why western dollars in wallets are steering clear of the country? You can ignore police officers and their drug / sex worker pimps planting narcotics on westerners (as confirmed by the former Czech Consul to Bali), you can ignore allowing RI to continue and Bashir to spout his hate out, you can ignore human rights abuse by your officers, you can ignore war crimes, you can ignore illegal ecological destruction lining politician’s pockets, you can ignore the billions whittled away through corruption out of money donated by westerners to help tsunami victims, you can ignore blatant violations of International law regarding rights to self-determination, you can ignore treating H5N1 as a very dangerous chance to make a buck, you can ignore the fact no justice exists in your country but tourists do not. So forget Miss Tourism Indonesia and hold an Ugly Indonesian Corruption Hag competition instead, this may at least show signs of humanity and recognition of the problem, not the normal “sell, sell, sell”; the later does not work.
