SINGAPORE: Indonesian film star Nicolas Saputra was kept busy last week in his role as a member of the judging panel at the Singapore International Film Festival (SIFF).

The 24-year-old was invited by the SIFF committee to join the official judging panel tasked with selecting films for the Festival's "Silver Screen" awards.

Nicolas, who shot to fame after playing the character Rangga in the 2002 hit film Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? (What's Up with Cinta?), joined a panel of five judges that watched a total of four independent films per day over four consecutive days, from April 8-11.

"It's been an honor to be a judge at the festival... it's been tiring, but great," the young actor said during a media interview in Singapore on Friday.

Members of the panel included other international actors and directors, including American actor and director Dustin Nguyen, who starred alongside Cate Blanchett in the 2005 Australian independent film Little Fish.

"Its refreshing (watching independent films)... after you see all of the Hollywood films with the same structure, same formula, entertaining and all -- but with independent films you can see other things as they are more rooted to the countries their stories come from," Nicolas said.

Nicolas is currently working with Channel V on his weekly show Screentime, in which he presents and discusses upcoming international and regional films. He will begin shooting for his next film on location in Central Java in June. -- JP/Deanne Whitfield
