JAKARTA: Popular band Slank and singer Iwan Fals will tour 36 cities in the country starting June 5 to mark Environment Day, which falls on the same date.

"Several singers and musicians who serve as environmental 'ambassadors' will join in the campaign to foster environmental awareness," Iffet Sidharta, Slank's manager, told Antara.

She said other celebrities joining the campaign included singers Cici Faramida, Nugie and Ully Sigar Rusady as well as group bands like Debu.

She said the singers and musicians would hold concerts to deliver a safe environment message.

"They will also plant some 3,000 trees provided by the Forestry Ministry in each city," she said.

State Minister for Environment Rachmat Witoelar said it was hoped the tour would improve people's environmental awareness.

In order to deliver the message, he said, there was a need to involve the right people.

"The government believes that Slank, Iwan Fals, Debu and others involved in the concert are the right people to deliver this message," he said. -- JP
