Indonesian chess star Irene Kharisma Sukandar on Friday revived her hopes for a maiden grandmaster norm at home after edging out Woman FIDE Master Thanda Aye Win of Myanmar in the sixth round of the Japfa Chess Festival.
The 16-year-old Woman International Master, who has collected three points from two wins and two draws, still needs to score at least three and a half points in the remaining four rounds to
earn her first grandmaster norm.
She must grab her second grandmaster norm before being awarded a grandmaster title.
"I was sure I will win the match against Win because I had good positions, but she made a blunder in the middle of the game, which made it easier to me," Irene said after defeating Win on move 43.
In the fifth round on Thursday night, Irene shared a 0.5-0.5 draw with tournament leader Li Roufan of Singapore after suffering two demoralizing defeats on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. (Iin/***)
