Indonesian girl Irene Kharisma Sukandar held Slovakian Jana Krivec to a draw in the Japfa chess festival final round on Sunday to earn her first grandmaster norm.
Earlier, the Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi) said Irene needed to score 6.5 points to grab her maiden grandmaster norm, but it revised the statement, saying that Irene only had to score 6 points to do so, Kompas reported.
Irene collected six points to finish third in the Japfa tournament, trailing tournament champion Lu Ruofan of Singapore by one point, and second placed Regina Pokorna of Slovakia by 0.5 points. (***)
