Nugie, Nirina to become torch bearers

ADPARA>JAKARTA: VJ-turned-actress Nirina Zubir and rock singer Nugie will join the 2008 Olympic torch runners in the Jakarta stretch of the relay on April 22.
Nirina and Nugie have been appointed by Coca-Cola, a sponsor of the Games, along with other green activists, like State Ministry for the Environment ambassador Valerina Daniel, Tri Mumpuni Wiyatno Iskandar, who developed micro-hydro power stations in villages, and Acehnese Azhar Idris, who is committed to promoting the replanting of mangroves in the tsunami-torn province.
"We are very honored. We never thought we would be able to join the global torch relay," Nirina told journalists.
Nirina, who starred in 30 Hari Mencari Cinta (30 Days Searching for Love), Belahan Jiwa (Soul Mate) and Get Married, and Agustinus "Nugie" Nugroho, who debuted with the song "Tertipu" (Tricked) in 1995, have been actively supporting World Wildlife Fund programs in Indonesia.
"We haven't done anything special in preparation for it. We know we are artists, not athletes. We're only trying to keep our bodies fit by having enough drink and food " Nirina said.
Other artists, Dian Satrowardoyo (appointed by computer maker Lenovo) and Luna Maya (Samsung), will also run alongside the runners in the torch relay. -- JP/Ary Hermawan
