Shanty considers religious role

JAKARTA: Actress-cum-singer Shanty hopes to play a role in the sequel of the successful religious-themed film by Hanung Bramantyo, Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love).

"I hope that after (returning from Mecca), I could play in the sequel of Ayat-Ayat Cinta," she said as quoted by Detik.com.

The former MTV VJ, born Annisa Nurul Shanty Kusuma Wardhani, is planning an umrah (minor haj) pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, this year.

She said the film, which is based on the popular novel by Habiburrahman El Shirazy, had opened her heart to God and made her want to be a better person.

"I've been arrogant to other people. It took quite a long time (for me) to realize it," she said.

When asked if she would wish for a soul mate in Mecca, Shanty, who recently broke up with film director Dimas Djayadiningrat, said, "I think I have used all my rights to ask for a spouse." -- JP
