MAKING MUD-PROOFÂ SHOES
Indonesia Footwear Service (IFSC) workers in Sidoarjo, East Java, sew material for shoes and sandals. After suffering a 70 percent drop in sales due to impacts of the devastating 2005 mudflow and drilling operations of PT Lapindo, the area's footwear industry has regained momentum, recording improved sales. The 352 workers sell as much as Rp 1 billion worth of footwear a day. The workers urged the government on Thursday not to increase fuel prices as it could harm the industry and bring further hardship to their families. (JP/Indra Harsaputra)
