Palm oil trees at Pangkalan Kerinci in Riau on Thursday. A WWF study found that deforestation, in many cases to plant biofuel friendly palm oil plants, in central Sumatra's Riau Province over the past 25 years has generated 3.7 gigatons of carbon dioxide.  (AP/Achmad Ibrahim)

We need, indeed, the deforestration to plant the new palm oil plants, but the problem is the way of deforestration itself. So far, they usually burn the forest during the dry season, so it will produce a terrible amount of smog (contain of harmful CO2). The smog will spread, not only over the plantation areas like Riau and many other parts in Indonesia, but also overseas (Singapore and Malaysia). So, I hope the govt can find and try other more environmental-friendly ways to the deforestration.
