INDONESIA: A former Indonesian ambassador to Singapore is allegedly implicated in embezzling the embassy construction budget, a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) official said Saturday.

Spokesman for the graft body Johan Budi said the KPK would investigate whether there had been misappropriation of funds allocated for renovations to the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore in 2003.

"There are two suspects in the case, one of whom is a former ambassador to Singapore," he said.

He refused to name the suspects.

KPK deputy chairman Bibit Waluyo said the commission had yet to decide when the suspects would be arrested.

According to previous reports, the KPK investigated alleged misappropriation of the Additional Expense Budget in 2003 for a renovation project at the embassy. It was estimated the fraud cost the state up to Rp 16 billion (US$1.7 million). -- JP
