SMS: Education Day

I disagree with the Indonesian education curriculum, especially the national examinations because students in the third year of high school are still burdened with some 11 subjects.

Meanwhile, only six subjects are included in the exams. If the government adopted the Cambridge/international curriculum, it should only take the subjects studied in the third year to be included in the final exams.

We are challenged to make improvements in a number of education aspects including teachers with higher education, smaller number of students in every class, better facilities, corruption elimination and better quality.

I've been a teacher since 1988 and I have learned that Jakarta faces some unique problems as well as similar problems faced by cities in Europe and America.

Education is the way to fight poverty in any developing country. It's good to see that Indonesia is embracing that fact, and doing what it can keep students learning, reading and writing. If the government keeps these up, the country will encounter substantial economic growth.

The only thing wrong is the inconsistency of our educational system. A new minister means new system. Therefore, we have to end such uncertainty. Then we have to establish the best educational system that is suitable for our country.

Teachers are trying all their best to give students good education, however students do not appreciate it and blame teachers when it come to their exams. They say that teachers did not teach them even though they did. I think this is the biggest challenge teachers face.

An education system has to make students have stronger character. Meanwhile, our education misses such an important aspect.

With the current education system, we only try to explore intelligence quotient (IQ) of the students, not their emotional quotient (EQ).

They are treated just like robots without morality. The real example is the current national exams! I think it's a disaster for Indonesia! The system just creates more corruptors.

Therefore, the biggest challenge that's facing our education system: How the system can make the nation become a more real human nation that has strong character to meet global challenges.

There are a number of problems involving teachers, students, parents and education infrastructure/facilities, which should be addressed:

Teachers for students of elementary, junior and senior high schools should hold at least bachelor degree (S1) and for university students, they should have master (S2) or doctoral degrees (S3).

Meanwhile, the education curriculum should be adjusted to the market demand so that all graduates can be accommodated by existing firms/enterprises.

The government must improve teachers' welfare. Students should have high discipline and use much of their time to do exercises for their lessons.

Their parents must also closely monitor the activities of their children to prevent them from getting involved in bad activities.

The government is required to repair damaged school buildings and to provide more educational infrastructure/facilities accordingly.

The government must realize the importance of people education. A country will experience good progress only when the literacy rate is high, which is basic for the development of any country.

The government should allocate adequate money for building new schools and giving free education, which must be implemented all over the country. The government should encourage parents to send their children to school.

It could consider the distribution of free midday meals for children and such a program will encourage children to come to school regularly. The government should set a target, say by 2025, that the country will be fully literate.

Bigotry is the problem with our education. Burning of history textbook, mindless curfews and spec ops in national exam. Did the policy-makers go to school?
