S. Jakarta couples compete for award

JAKARTA: Ten couples in South Jakarta are vying for the Keluarga Sakinah (Harmonious Family Award) organized by the South Jakarta municipality and ministry for religious affairs, officials said Thursday.
The winner in South Jakarta will represent the municipality in the provincial competition, South Jakarta municipal secretary Anas Effendi said.
The couples will have to undergo a written test, interview and be subjected to observation. The highest-scoring couple will go to the provincial level.
The annual award has several criteria, for example, the couples must have been married for at least 25 years, be at least 45 years old, never have been divorced, have been in a monogamous marriage, have raised successful children, academically and professionally.
"Globalization and modernization have contributed to the shift in family and marital values," Anas said, as quoted by Beritajakarta.com. "This award is hoped to avert a further shift." -- JP
