Letter: Brazilian embassy clarifies

Your article in a special report published on May 8, titled "Plan to import Brazil beef sparks debate", has been read and carefully noted.

We thank you for your very balanced article. However, I would like to comment on the graphic illustration of POB prices of beef in 2007, since the data presented could be misinterpreted or misleading.

General readers may draw the conclusion that prices of Brazilian beef as compared to Australian beef in several market destinations are not different, or just about the same, when one looks at the close dotted points on the graph.

It is a given fact that prices of Brazilian beef in almost every market destination are substantially lower than those of other exporting countries.
