Bina Nusantara University (Binus) rector Gerardus Polla looked excited on May 6, an historical day for the university that started out 25 years ago as a small computer course in Kemanggisan, West Jakarta.

That Tuesday morning, Binus was awarded four International Quality Certificates from worldwide certification company SGS in recognition of the university's excellent performance and services.

SGS awarded Binus the ISO 9001:2000 certificate, the IWA 2:2007 for the application of the ISO 9001:2000 in Education, the Education Criteria for Performance Excellence based on Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) Criteria and Service Excellence Certification.

"This is something we are proud of. We are challenged to keep on improving our quality," Polla said.

This international recognition, he added, would strengthen the commitment of Binus to be "a world-class knowledge institution in continuous pursuit of innovation and enterprise", as set out last year in itsVision".

Haryanto Kusno Putranto, an official from the National Education Ministry, noted that Binus is the only institution in the country to received the four certificates together.

"On behalf of the education ministry, I highly appreciate this achievement," he said.

The SGS certification company also lauded Binus through its representative, Robert James: "It is really an achievement. That is remarkable," he said.

In order to realize its 20/20 Vision, Binus has implemented quality standards in accordance with the Malcolm MBNQA Criteria and Service Excellence Criteria.

The MBNQA is one of the world's oldest award programs, and awards those organizations that fulfill its seven performance criteria of Leadership, Strategic Planning, Customer and Market Focus, Analysis and Knowledge Management, Measurement, Human Resource Focus, Process Management and Business Result.

"You have come a long way in a short time. The key is continuous improvement. Please strive for more achievements in the future," James added.

Bernard Gunawan, chief executive officer of the Bina Nusantara Group, underlined Binus' long-standing commitment to educating and preparing students for global competition.
