Don't overreact on Ahmadiyah

M. Husni Mubarok ,  Jakarta   |  Mon, 05/12/2008 10:51 AM  |  Opinion

The issue of Ahmadiyah as an Islamic sect has been fiercely debated since it was first broached a few months ago. It's a highly controversial subject which draws strong opinions from Muslims in the country.

Some agree with the government's plan to ban the sect while others oppose it.

It has been argued that the sect violates the core principles of Islamic faith and offends its basic teachings. This is a fair argument because Ahmadiyah followers declare Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as their prophet. This claim clearly goes against the Koran.

In addition, they introduced new teachings by obliging their followers to go to Rabwa and Qodiyya -- not to Mecca and Medina -- for the haj and other rituals.

But unlike mainstream Islam the prophet at the head of this deviant sect is an ordinary man, a writer who sought divine guidance and underwent several weeks of solitude in an abandoned mosque. Compared to the Prophet Muhammad, he is nothing.

The presence of such a sect is not the only issue kindling social unrest. Other problems such as severe poverty, scarcity of staple foods, lack of proper education, unemployment and rampant corruption are among the urgent issues severely affecting people's lives.

Soothing the restlessness and promoting a harmonious society can't be achieved by making a scapegoat of the sect and its followers, but rather by eradicating poverty and ignorance. Hark back to a saying from the Hadiths: Kaad al-faqru an yakuna kufran (Poverty can make anyone lose their faith).

Most of Ahmadiyah's followers are poor and ill-educated, especially in terms of religion. These conditions can lead them to join such a sect -- not only Ahmadiyah but others too -- especially when these new sects' messages coincide with their needs.

Psychologically it represents an expression of their disappointment in their lives. One manifestation of this is their resorting to behavior that is at loggerheads with the majority of society in a bid to attract attention -- by embracing a new religion, for instance

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and its supporters must realize that so many people becoming followers of the new sect is evidence Muslim people's faith is at a breaking point and the MUI has failed to bring Muslims in line with authentic Islamic teaching through education.

The MUI and other mainstream Muslims have to recognize education and experience are the two main influences outside of the Koran for anyone's interpretation of Islamic teaching. This is the reason why people interpret Islam differently.

The MUI should focus more on tackling the poverty and ignorance that led to the establishment of the sect through concrete actions such as handing out business loans or scholarships, instead of merely playing the blame-game.

Simply blaming the sect's followers as "misled people" is neither wise nor effective, and it risks alienating them. As a consequence they will regard mainstream Muslims with hatred, making it difficult to draw them back into the fold. The MUI should engage with these followers to identify and solve the problems at the root of their heresy.

The MUI's edict declaring the sect heretical is useless and ineffective because it will incite people at the grassroots level to acts of violence against the sect. The homes of Ahmadiyah followers were burned down and destroyed by such people claiming to be acting in the name of God.

But the sect is still alive and kicking. It has spread out further and garners sympathy from other communities and international societies because of its role as a suppressed minority. This issue will be a fanfare for those targeting the development of peaceful Islam in Indonesia.

Declaring the sect followers heretical is an outdated practice that needs to be changed. Otherwise it can become a tool for sect followers to accuse the MUI and its supporters of violating human rights. Taking everything into consideration, the harm done by issuing such a declaration far outweighs the benefits.

Denouncing the existence of a sect by issuing an edict as the MUI has done is clearly ineffective and counterproductive. It should be withdrawn because if it continues to stand, the victims, the destruction and the wastefulness will not end.

Our people should have been given a decent religious education and should have been taught to tolerate the opinions, beliefs and religions of others. If the MUI continues with its antiquated and uncivilized methods, it will be remembered as an intolerant, cruel and arrogant religious institution by others here and throughout the world.

Bismillahhirahmanirahim
Dear Mr.Husni Mubarik

I have red your article in Jakarta post.I am a ahmadi Muslim living in Bosnia. There are many lie which people say about us.We believe same as other Muslims, like five piller of Islam six believe as believe on Allah, angels, prophet etc.We have same Quran same namaz same qibla.Ahmadi went in Mecca for Hajj not in Rabwah or Qadian.Only people visit these places to attend some meetings and we never say its like haj etc. From Pakistan our members are not allowed to go for Hajj but from other countries they went.I knew many members who did Hajj. All Muslim believe that in the later days Imam Mahdi and Isa will come in the Ummat of Hazrat Muhammad s.a.w.s.We believe that Isa a .s is died a natural death and it was a metaphor and one person of the Ummat of Hazrat Muhammad s.a.w.s. get the name of Isa because of similarties with Isa a.s.We believe he is came according the Hadis of Ibne Maja Mahdi and Isa will be one person.
There is no difference in the believe of Ahmadi Muslim and other Muslim difference is about the person weather is appear or not.We say he is came and other say he will come. How one call us non Muslim if we have same believe.Because of this believe if we are no Muslim what you will say to other Muslim whoa re not Ahmadi but have same believe. We believe Hazrat Muhammad .s.a.w.s. last lay baring prophet .He is our leader Prophet we only follow him and Imam Mahdi do,nt bring any new law he guide us towards the way of the Holy Prophet s.a.w.s.

Wit best wishes

Ahmad from Bosnia

I wonder why Indonesian people know so much about the Islam and so less about the rest of the world.

dear brother
Assalu alaikum. I have gone through ur copinion. There u mention taht ahmadis dont go for hajj rather prefer to like to go to rabwah & qadian. So for knowledge go they go to Holy Qaaba for performing Hajj and i have seen some ahmadis to go to qaaba for hajj . Besides The saudi govt. officialy put injunction over their going to Holy Qaaba. So ur allegation against them is false.
they guess holy prophet Muhammed (SM) as khatamannabiyeen, the seal of prophet. This is also ur false allegation as per mine study on them.
The history of world says that the popular noble man was born in this islamic like as First muslim nobel laureate prof. abdus salam. Sir Chowdhury Jafar Ullah Khan, pkaistan's first foreign minister, president of security council of United Nations,Chief justice of International court of justice was also born in this islamic sect.Pkaistan's former finance minster Mr. M M Ahmed was also member of this sect. There are a lot of literate persons belong to this sect.So ur allegation in this case also false.
please study their History, communicate with them & try to understand them & listen what they want to spaek.Make argument dont go for any illegal action, activities which is against humanity.Let Allah to decide the matter cause it is directly belongs to Allah.

ma assalam

your brother
Arif

The Ahmadiyya muslim jamaath is theonly jamaath in the world which represent the great religion Islam in a most beatifulway without controversies. As far as the other remaing sects or so called jamaaths are ina state of confussions, condtradictions and declaring each others as kafir.
The Ahmadis accepting Hadhrath Mirza Ghulamahmad(AS)is as a sub ordinate prophet of Holy Prophet Muhammad(SAW),because the Holy Quran and Holy Prophet(SAW) prophesied about the coming of the promised masih after Holy Prophet(saw).Only the so called mainstream sects are stands against the teachings of Holy Quran and Holy prophet(saw) by claming that jesus is still living in the heavens, and nobody can become as prophet by following the Holy prophet(saw).
The ahmadis are banned from performing Haj by the mullahs and their goverments. The fact of visisting Rabwah or Qadian by ahmadis only for the spirtual traings. The respect for the HolyMakkah and Madina among the ahmadis is so great that nobody can measure it.
As far as the status of the Hadrath Ahmad(AS)is, he is only a sub ordinate prophet of Holy prophet(SAW).The Holy prophet(SAW) is like a sun and his beloved servant Hadrath ahmad(as)is like a moon.
The great people of Indonesia accepting Ahmadiyyath because they are loving islam so much and very soon many more and more people will accept this jamaath and no power in the earth will stop it.
The slogan of ahmadis is LOVE FOR ALL; HATRED FOR NONE, so nobody will get any sort harm by the ahmadis but ahmadis pray for the hidaya of this ignorant people, who harm them.
So far many goverments ,organisations and riches accepting their failure in stopping the progress of this jamaath ,surely no power in the earth can stop the progress of the Ahmadiyyath.
MUBARAK.

If Mr Mubarok is a student counselor then he should have an understanding of the basic principles of research: check your facts and use original sources wherever possible.

1. Ahmadis believe in Muhammad SAW ibn Abdullah of Mecca as their prophet - i.e., the prophet of Islam and also believe firmly that he was Khatamun Nabiyeen - the seal of all the prophets. Their Kalima is exactly the same as the kalima of all sunni Muslims. This kalima is receited at every meeting of Ahmadis and during all Ahmadi prayers which are exactly the same as any other Muslim prayer.

2. The place of pigrimage - which is one of the pillars of Islam and therefor of Ahmadiyyat - is to the Sacred Mosque in Mecca. The Saudi Arabian government prevent Ahmadis from going on Hajj. This is not the fault of Ahmadis. There is no "hajj" to Rabwah nor to Qadian and this is not in any way an obligation on Ahmadis. (where on earth is "Qodiyya", Mr Mubarok?)

3. As for Ahmadis being relatively poor and uneducated, this is the stupidiest allegation of all. Ahmadis receive not a penny of support from anyone outside their own membership. They have done more than anyone else to spread the message of Islam worldwide. The president of the International Court of Justice was an Ahmadi. The ONLY Muslim Nobel laureate for physics was an Ahmadi.

If you try to spread the myths that are being perpetrated by the right wing bigots acting in the name of Islam among the truly poor and ill-educated people in these islands in a journal like The Jakarta Post you will find yourself exposing your own ignorance.
