State power firm PT PLN has set up an energy conservation team to supervise and support the energy conservation efforts of individual buildings and houses.

"The team will be effective from June and will provide advice to building supervisors on conservation measures," PT PLN director for Java, Madura and Bali, Murtaqi Syamsudin, said Tuesday.

The team will undergo bimonthly performance evaluations in order to assess and monitor the possibility of implementing large-scale energy conservation supervisory and assistance measures for major PLN clients, Murtaqi said.

"Our target is to get June's total energy usage below 80 percent of the average national usage in terms of quantity and expenditure. We still have plenty of time," he said.

He said the initial phase would cover two distribution regions -- the Jakarta and Tangerang region, and the West Java and Banten region.

Both regions make up 52 percent of the country's total energy consumption, he said.

"We are expecting instant results from this measure. All units located beyond the said areas will also form similar conservation teams," Murtaqi said.

PT PLN general manager for Jakarta and Tangerang, Purnomo Wili, said the energy used to run advertising billboards would also be monitored throughout the city and neighboring Tangerang.

"We are planning to install 'timers' on the billboards to allow the boards to light up between 6 pm and 12 midnight, instead of the previous 6 pm to 6 am arrangement," Purnomo said. (*)
