PALEMBANG: Orchid lovers and breeders from Indonesia and many other countries are participating in the Asian Orchid Exhibition 2008 being held in Kambang Iwak until Monday.
Officially opened over the weekend by Mufidah Jusuf Kalla, the wife of the Vice President, the week-long exhibition features enthusiasts from 60 countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
"Through the exhibition, the government will be able to facilitate the development of orchid plantations so they can penetrate the global market," Mufidah said during the opening ceremony Saturday.
The chairwoman of the Association of Indonesian Orchid Lovers' South Sumatra branch, Sulastri, said the exhibition would encourage more farmers to develop the orchid business in the region. --JP
