JAKARTA: Australia will provide an estimated Rp 3.6 trillion (US$391 million) in development assistance to Indonesia in 2008-2009.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer said the record-breaking assistance increased the focus of the aid program on practical development outcomes, promoting faster progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and greater attention to alleviating the situation of the most vulnerable people.

Work will commence on Rp 2.3 trillion worth of projects to improve roads and bridges in eastern Indonesia, with funds provided by the Australia Indonesia Partnership for Reconstruction and Development.

"There will also be an emphasis on improving maternal and neonatal health and providing nine years of basic education for all boys and girls," said Farmer. -- JP
