North Sulawesi regent sentenced for graft

The anti-corruption court has sentenced North Sulawesi regent Vonnie Anneke Panambunan to one and a half years in prison for embezzling funds related to an airport feasibility study.

Presiding Judge Moefri ruled that Vonny, who was then the head of consulting company PT Mahakam Diastar International (MDI), was proven to have marked up the cost of the Kutai Kartanegara airport feasibility study between 2003 and 2004 in East Kalimantan.

The study was conducted during the tenure of disgraced former East Kalimantan regent, Syaukani Hassan Rais, who was convicted late last year for causing Rp 113 billion (US$12.1 million) in state losses and sentenced to two and a half years behind bars and fined a Rp 50 million.

The cost markup of Kutai airport's feasibility study occurred in 2003, when Syaukani approved a proposed budget of US$722,700 set by Vonny's firm, MDI, even though it had yet to be included in Kutai's regency budget. (dre/*)
