Senior actor Sophan Sophian died Saturday after falling off his Harley Davidson motorcycle in Ngawi, East Java while in a convoy to commemorate the 100th National Awakening Day.
Police reconstruction at the accident scene revealed that the motorcycle hit a 15-centimeter deep pothole in a bridge in Planglor village, Kedunggalar district in Ngawi at about 9:30 a.m.
Ngawi police chief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Eddy S. Tambunan said it was a single accident due to bad road conditions between Ngawi and Surakarta in Central Java.
"According to eyewitnesses' statements, the convoy passed with a speed of 60 kilometers per hour," he said.
"At about kilometer 18-19 from Ngawi heading to Surakarta, Sophan lost his balance when his motorcycle's wheel hit a pothole and tried to evade it."
Eddy said that Sophan fell of his motorcycle and was dragged for about 25 meters from the pothole.
Sophan, a former politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) was rushed to the hospital. Eddy said that Sophan died some 10 minutes after the accident.
