JAKARTA: Governor Fauzi Bowo said Saturday the city administration would hold a book fair during the upcoming school holidays in order to improve the reading habits of the community.
The book fair, he said as quoted by Beritajakarta.com, would be held in conjunction with the 2008 Jakarta Fair.
Most people in Jakarta did not have a strong reading abilities because their parents had not introduced them to reading during their childhood, Fauzi said.
"A civilized nation is one which always prioritizes information," Fauzi said at an event in recognition of 2008 National Book Day at the Nyi Ageng Serang city library in Kuningan, South Jakarta.
"I hope the book fair will be successful, not only at a local level, but also internationally -- at least in the Southeast Asia region," Fauzi said.
During the event, Fauzi accepted a donation of 4,000 books from the Association of Indonesian Publishers. -JP
