The Jakarta administration will hold a national conference and exhibition next week to develop cooperation among the country's regions on climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
The Jakarta Initiative to Fight Climate Change, will be open to the public and will take place from May 30 to June 1 at the Jakarta Convention Center in South Jakarta.
The event's steering committee chairman Budirama Natakusumah said Thursday all regional administrations in Indonesia were invited to attend the event so they could learn from each other.
"The event will be a good opportunity for participants to exchange information and develop more urban community-based actions to implement the Bali Roadmap that was endorsed last December," said Budirama, who is also the head of the Jakarta Environmental Management Board.
The Bali Roadmap toward Protecting the Climate came out of the 2007 United Nations' Climate Change Conference. In the roadmap, over 180 countries agreed to take measures to mitigate climate change.
He said some measures Jakarta could share with other regional administrations during the event included Car-Free Day, making biopore holes and developing bicycle lanes.
He hoped the event could help all participants realize the most important thing in mitigating climate change was to change people's habits.
"For example, the main aim of Car-Free Day and the plan to build bicycle lanes is to reduce people's dependency on vehicles that produce carbon gas," he said.
The event's organizing committee chairman Ahmad Safrudin said the organizer also planned excursions for the participants so they could learn about programs already implemented in Jakarta.
"We will take the participants to some sites so they can see the city's water front system, mangrove restoration program, biopore making and emission tests for themselves," he said.
Head of the board's environmental damage control unit Daniel Abbas encouraged Jakarta residents to come and improve their environmental awareness.
Anyone who wants to join the conference can register by paying Rp 100,000 (US$11) at jicc@kpbb.org or to its secretariat at Ranuza Building 3rd floor, on Jl. Timor 10, Menteng, Central Jakarta, or by phone at 021-31906807.(uwi)
