Booming noises and tremors caused by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau were reported and occasionally heard at an observation post 42 km away.
"We heard the booming noises and tremors from morning to evening," said surveillance officer Jumono on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara newswire. Jumono is based at an observation post in Pasauran village, Banten.
He said that 24 loud booms coming from Mount Anak Krakatau, which is located in the waters of Sunda Strait, were recorded. Four were recorded on Sunday.
According to recording data at Pasauran observation post, there was a significant increase in the volcano's seismic activity on Monday. By 6.00 p.m. the seismographs detected 30 deep volcanic quakes, 76 shallow volcanic quakes, 109 outbursts, 9 tremors and 95 gas-and-steam emissions.
"Today the explosions and seismic activity have increased to 319 from 268 activities last week," said Jumono.
He added that a new crater had increased to diameter of 250 meters.
Anak Krakatau or "Child of Krakatau" is a new volcanic island formed after a series of eruptions since 1927.
In August 1883, the volcano on Krakatau erupted with such violence that the sound was heard as far away as Madagascar and Alice Springs, thousands of kilometers away.
Two-thirds of the island was destroyed and roughly 20 cubic kilometers of rock flew into the atmosphere. It was one of the largest explosions on Earth in recorded history.
The eruption also raised a 40-meter-high tsunami, resulting in an estimated 36,000 deaths when it washed ashore as much as 10 kilometers inland from the coast of nearby islands. (**)
