Six community units in Jagakarsa district, South Jakarta, are representing the capital in the My Green City environmental competition organized by cigarette producer PT HM Sampoerna (Sampoerna).
Several community units in Cilincing and Muara Angke districts in North Jakarta were also taking part in the competition, but the jury eliminated them during the preliminary rounds.
Jury member Hadi Susilo Arifin from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture said there were two main elements being judged in the competition: the community's consistency in conducting green programs and the scale of community involvement in the programs.
Sampoerna's My Green City was first introduced in 2004, in Semarang, Central Java, originally as a non-competition program. The number of participating cities has grown significantly each year. In 2007, 23 cities from Java and Sumatra participated in the program.
Starting this year, communities taking part in the program will compete for Green Award prizes totaling Rp 180 million (US$19,350).
Fifty-four community units from 12 cities across the country have made it past the preliminary selection round, and will now compete in the local selection from June 15 to 30. The grand final of the event will take place in August.
Besides Jakarta, the cities represented in the event are Madiun, Malang, Pamekasan, Probolinggo and Surabaya, all in East Java; Pati, Pekalongan, Semarang and Tegal in Central Java; Yogyakarta; and Bandung in West Java.
Hadi said the community units would be assessed in three categories, comprising Neighborhood Gardens, Green Neighborhood and Clean Neighborhood.
"I actually don't see this (program) as a competition, but more as appreciation for communities that have carried out sustainable green environment programs," he said Thursday.
Another jury member, Fitradjaja Purnama from a Surabaya-based community development consultancy, said the main focus of the program was to increase community participation in local green efforts.
Suminto Alexander Hermawanto from Sampoerna said My Green City was different from several government-promoted environmental programs like Kalpataru or Adipura.
"In this program, the motivation comes from the community's spirit, not being induced from the top by governmental institutions," he said, adding that organizers hoped to take the program national in the future.(uwi)

Sampoerna sponsoring an environmental competition?? Hello? I find that absolutely laughable. Have they logically thought this through? They don't exactly promote environmentalism with cigarette sales. Anybody can see the amount of people who smoke in Indonesia, blowing their smoke into the air around them. Have you seen the amount of cigarette butts laying in the streets everywhere? They certainly aren't biodegradable. How does this make any sense at all?
