Iraq's finance minister says it has given US$8 million to the
UN refugee agency to assist some 750,000 Iraqi refugees living in
Jordan.
Iraqi Finance Minister Bayan Jabr presented the money to the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees during a brief
ceremony at the Iraqi Embassy in the Jordanian capital on Sunday.
Jabr said the money will be spent on education, health and
housing programs for Iraqi refugees in Jordan.
He said the donation was part of $25 million for assisting
refugees in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon pledged by his government
at an international conference in Geneva last year.
According to UNHCR, 2.2 million Iraqis have fled abroad,
mostly to neighboring Syria and Jordan. (****)
