The Raw and the Cooked

Does our longing for nature exist in our natures, or does it develop later from our surroundings? What does nature look like in an urban setting?

Peter Bialobrezeski examines these questions in the context of his latest project "The Raw and Cooked", which looks at the structures of changing cities in Asia.

The results are meticulous juxtapositions of green flora to steel structures, asphalt roads, slum areas and other urban edifices. Looking at these photos we are urged to question the natural structures that underlie our modern life.

Peter Bialobrzeski (1961) has won numerous awards, including the World Press Photo Award in 2002 for his series about Asian megacities.

These six images were produced during his stay in Southeast Asian capital cities from October 2007 until March 2008 and form a part of the "Mapping Invisible Cities" exhibition at GoetheHaus Jakarta, on display from June 3 -- July 3.
