JAKARTA: Hundreds of street sweepers working in Central Jakarta queued patiently Friday morning at the municipality office to collect their free food packages.

The municipality distributed the food packages to them after it received an Adipura award recently for being a clean municipality.

"These food packages are the token of our gratitude to the sanitation workers who have done a lot for the city's cleanliness," Mayor Sylviana Murni said, as quoted by beritajakarta.com.

She said the street sweepers' contribution was significant to the municipality's environment.

"When the rest of us are sleeping, street sweepers take to the streets to clean," she said.

"The packages we give are nothing compared to their dedication."

Jaelani, one of the street sweepers, said he was thankful for the package.

"Even though it is only a food package, we are still thankful for the attention given to us street sweepers," he said. -- JP
