Protesters destroy car on Sudirman Street

The Jakarta Post ,  Jakarta   |  Tue, 06/24/2008 6:50 PM  |  Headlines

Protesters on Tuesday destroyed a government car passing through the Sudirman Street in front of the Atmajaya University.

Elshinta radio reported that the protesters stopped the car, forced the driver to leave the car and set it on fire, causing panic among people watching the protest.

A spokeswoman from the university told Elshinta radio that the
protesters were not Atmajaya students.

She added her students were still taking the university final exams when the incident occurred.

She claimed the protesters called for an investigation into the death of Maftuh Fauzi, a student from the National University who died last Friday after he was released from police jail and
received treatment from hospitals.

The demonstrators also reportedly rejected the fuel price hikes.

Elshinta radio reported at 6:48 p.m. that the protest ended as police were deployed to the location. (***)

I really confused of what were they thinking when they burnt down the car. They bear the prestige name of university student, yet they were seeing like bandits.

Protest against the hike of oil price is everywhere. Let's face it, the hike happened in everywhere not only in Indonesia. If we keep been spoiled by the subsidy, forget the idea of national awakening. It's not gonna happen tough.

The protesters should have more thought before they ruined the car, the incident may only trigger other people to join the mass and in the end, it might cause a riot.

Let's pray that God will save this nation. Mentality should be forged into passion.

This demonstration shows us that the mentality of the protesters are not matured at all. Since a democracy country allows the people to do demonstration, people should do the demonstration in a peaceful way and not in an unpleasant way.

I am very sad that the culprits were university students. University students should be sensible in any steps that they would take, furthermore I dont agree that the university students should do this kind of demonstration. It showed us that university students are indifferent with illeterate people.

As Indonesians we all feel the badly impact caused by oil price hike but we absolutely have no control to prevent this price hike. We should support our goverment instead because if it were to continue subsidising the petrol price, it would make the rich become richer and the poor become poorer.
If you want to show that you love and care this country, you should go study and help this country solve out the problems.

I hope the government can take necessary actions to prevent this to happen again in the future. Don't wait until it reaches critical situation.

I think that's too much and quite dangerous because that could trigger a riot again in Jakarta since the people are economically stretched because of the recent oil price hike.

Oil price hike is everywhere around the world including in the first world countries. People should be patient to bear this situation and government should work extra hard to control this situation.
