Letter: Legislation for non-oil energy imperative

Sat, 06/28/2008 11:54 AM  |  Reader's Forum

With the failure of the oil and gas liberalization policy under Law No.22/2001 on petroleum and natural gas, and the world oil crisis directly affecting Indonesians by causing local fuel prices to rise, the time has come to safeguard non-oil energy through government control as required by the Constitution.

One of the non-oil energy sources, now known as other-than-oil (OTO) energy, is nano-silicon solar energy, which is locally touted as a strategic and environmentally friendly fuel or green energy. It should therefore be put under state control through a state-owned enterprise instead of private interests.

In this way, the retail sale of OTO energy under the liberal, free-market and capitalist system will be prevented, so high fuel prices will not be an issue. To this end, a law or presidential decree should be immediately enacted to protect the new energy and serving as a commitment to combat global warming.
