A local official says a blast at a roadside pig market in the northeastern state of Assam has killed six people and injured 40.
Local magistrate P. Gohain says the blast occurred Sunday in Kumarikata near the Bhutan border. About 20 of the victims were injured critically.
Gohain says officials are still investigating who was responsible for the blast. Militant separatists have set off bombs in the region in the past.
Several rebel groups are fighting for autonomy or independence in India's northeast.
The militants say India's national government exploits the region's rich natural resources but does little for the area's indigenous people.(**)
