It is with a sense of bemusement and bewilderment that I write to you in reference to the article titled "Euro 2008, a subprime soccer extravaganza".
I was amazed that, having admitted to not having watched many matches in the tournament, the writer still felt qualified to offer an opinion that is clearly at odds with what has been occurring in Austria and Switzerland over the past three weeks.
I must point out in reference to the comments that some matches have been dull, that some of the punishing attacking has been ruthless, quick and a joy to witness.
I also feel that, like far too many observers, the writer is merely hanging on for exciting action in the final third of the pitch. Admittedly I am a great fan of central defenders but I urge all viewers to observe and appreciate those players who are not smashing volleys into the back of the net.
There is a fine art to a back four probing the opposition midfield and equally, there is a fine art to a midfield harrying and harassing the opposition midfield.
I also take exception to the comment about group leaders being knocked out in the quarterfinals. Surely it is this very unpredictability which keeps us all watching.
Had it been otherwise, I can only imagine that we would have been treated to an article about the boring predictability of group winners progressing to the semifinals.
No, I'm afraid you are sorely mistaken. The tournament has once again been a success, both on and off the pitch.
I am an Englishman living in Indonesia for a year, and I have been thrilled by the spectacle on offer -- admittedly I would have been more thrilled had England qualified (but that's another story).
