Forum: Editorial - Surveys on sharia

Sharia law is unconstitutional, and therefore should be banned. Islamic groups, failing to press the adoption of sharia law on national law, are starting to try through municipal laws, like in Tangerang, Cianjur, Padang and Cirebon.

Beware of the regional sharia laws, as they will force themselves onto all parts of pluralistic Indonesia. If that happens, we from Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, Ambon, Papua and Manado are well willing to separate ourselves from mother Indonesia, as our basic religious rights cannot be defended by the state.

And the main question is, "Will sharia law be fit to be applied in Indonesia, which has so many differences?" Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world.

But Indonesia does not consist of Muslims only. And what about the further consequences? By the further consequences, I mean the existence of many original cultures in Indonesia, such as traditional dance costumes.

It has already happened in a high school in Yogyakarta which applied a miniature of sharia law. Performing a Javanese traditional dance is prohibited due to its costume, which is "assumed" to expose aurat (parts of body that cannot be exposed in public). It is a traditional dance, for God's sake!

The writer is hiding the fact or failed to mention that sharia law is meant for Muslims only. The writer's self-opinionated statement in saying "No good Muslim would be caught publicly saying he or she opposes sharia" shows how little the writer understands Muslims and their Islamic belief.

Islam is not about submission to the public, but submission to Allah above all others. As such, it is absurd to associate someone who places public interest over and above Allah's wishes with the term "good Muslim".

Osman has probably not traveled to the home of Islam, Saudi Arabia, and is therefore unaware that sharia law applies to people of all religions living or even visiting there.

I recall reading numerous stories about how in municipalities from Tangerang, Padang, Aceh and Makassar, that sharia customs are being enforced upon everybody regardless of their religion.

One wonders if Allah had intended for sharia to apply to ethnic groups other than Arabs why He did not provide translations for the Holy Koran.

Undoubtedly, there are strong rationalizations which will be presented by Islamic scholars to explain this, but their are many who will remain skeptical.
