A survey has shown that the popularity of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) is declining and being overtaken by front-runner Megawati. The SBY government's policies have indeed produced a negative impact on ordinary people, particularly those concerning fuel prices and basic needs.
In the view of laymen like me, however, SBY's popularity is just rising with the soaring prices of necessities resulting from the fuel price hike. It has been reported lately that the price of liquefied petroleum gas will also be raised (while its market price has already increased). The news again makes SBY popular among people as the source of their difficulties.
The policy on kerosene conversion into gas for reasons of economics turns out to be unrealistic. If the gas price keeps rising, the majority of the population will get into bigger trouble. Most people have found it hard to make ends meet, let alone to pay their children's school expenses.
This is the reason why SBY is getting more popular as a leader favoring the upper classes while overlooking poor people, who cannot afford to cover their swelling expenditures in spite of the cash aid provided to compensate for the fuel price increase. How come, Pak SBY?
