Indonesian Police still do not perform their function: to serve and to guard the people. We have seen many police officers abuse their power by robbing contractors, who carry out reconstruction projects in Aceh.
They ask for money, claiming that they have the right to the money, even though those contractors have hired their owned security guards to secure their projects. What a mess.

The image of the police is still bad. It will not change unless it is overhauled from within. First and foremost, it must stop recruiting people based on money.
How can you get best candidates if your consideration is just how to get money from candidates? Stop taking money from subordinates and don't use money for promotion and education. Increase the number of police and reduce their working hours.

The police's image has improved positively but it still has a long way to go to become a police department that all of us dream of. In short, keep doing the right thing. Happy anniversary.

Editorial: Gloria a Espana -- July 1, p. 6
I was in an Internet cafe the night the Germany-Spain final was to take place when a female stranger asked me "Oom, you must be betting on Germany."
I replied no. "Spain will come out victorious," I said simply because I went to Spain in 1980 and I speak the language. It was a prophetic statement on my part. Spain became the champions.

Businessman bribes lawmaker -- July 2, p. 1
I'm impressed with how the KPK is trying to clean up the government and the House of Representatives. But there is more work to be done. If the legislators are found guilty, I would like to see what kind punishment they'll be facing.
Let's hope it'll be heavy enough because all these arrests will mean nothing if they get a lenient sentence. These crooks should not be involved in building the country. Tough actions needs to be followed up by tough law punishment for these crooks.

Increasing the tax on tobacco -- July 2, p. 6
Great to see some media articulation of a serious health issue. I think so many Indonesians are so addicted to tobacco. There should be some shock therapy.
Tell it the way it is. Tobacco is a drug -- a highly addictive drug. It kills people. WHO estimates that tobacco kills 450,000 Indonesian each year. This is bigger than any tsunami.
By all means increase taxes, but that needs to be accompanied by an abolition of the abundant advertising material. Finally, take the lead of many other countries by putting photos of lung cancer on every packet.
As a global traveler, it is clear to me that Indonesia takes the prize, a dubious honor, for unfitted promotion of tobacco -- Indonesians killing Indonesians.
And Indonesia would be a more beautiful place without all those huge billboards extolling the benefits of an addictive drug.
In the interest of the health and well being of its citizens, it is time for the government to take the lead.
