JAKARTA: Good news for Indonesian nationals who wish to drive in Europe: As of July 1, the Belgian government now recognizes drivers' licenses issued by the Indonesian police.
On its website, the ministry of foreign affairs says Indonesian nationals need only exchange their drivers' licenses for Belgian ones to drive around the European nation.
The new rule is a result of the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, to which Indonesia and Belgium are state parties. It took the two countries 18 years to reach the agreement, however.
Belgian Transportation Ministry official JP Gailly said the agreement was made in appreciation of Belgium's Indonesian community, which numbers about 1,000. -- JP
