SURAKARTA, Central Java: Award-winning film director Garin Nugroho announced Monday he would direct a theater performance titled Iron Bed, an adaptation from his film Opera Java (Javanese Opera), abroad in August.
Garin who has directed 17 wide-screen films, revealed the play would be staged four nights during an international art festival in Zurich, Switzerland from Aug. 18-21.
"The festival committee asked me to present Opera Java in a theater performance. I use opera as a form of play. I combine Langendriyan (Javanese opera style) with puppetry," the 47-year-old director said.
Garin said he was no stranger to the theater world since he frequently directed plays when he was a senior high school student.
"I wrote five theater scripts during high school. But now, I don't know where the scripts are," Nugroho said.
He added The Iron Bed would combine theater, dance, music and art video.
He said the Zurcher Theater Spektakel 2008 would involve the participation of hundreds of artists from 40 countries in Asia, South America and Africa. --JP/Blontank Poer
