JAKARTA: The directorate general of taxation and Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the use of an Internet-based land and building tax payment system.

"With the MoU, we expect to raise the number of people paying land and building tax online to 1.5 million this year," director general of taxation Darmin Nasution said.

Darmin said that between January and June, 737,000 people had paid land and building tax via the electronic payment system.

Indonesia has 55 million land and building tax payers.

To set up the electronic payment system, the directorate general of taxation has cooperated with Bank Central Asia (BCA), Bank Mandiri, Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII), Bank Nusantara Parahyangan, Bank Bukopin, Bank Bumiputera, Bank Jatim, Bank Bali and Bank DKI.

BNI president director Gatot Suwondo said he expected 10 percent of the tax payments would be made online, a sum worth Rp 2.4 trillion (US$261 million). -- JP
